Meet Harold
Harold A. Pope is a candidate for the Michigan House of Representatives in the 74th District, bringing with him a lifetime of leadership, service, and a deep commitment to community empowerment.
Raised by a single mother in Albany, New York, Harold learned early the values of hard work, resilience, and advocacy. His mother, Anne M. Pope, was a dedicated community leader and longtime president of the NAACP Albany branch, where she championed civil rights and equitable opportunities for marginalized communities. Inspired by her example, Harold developed a strong sense of purpose and a belief that meaningful change requires both courage and collective action.
Determined to build a strong foundation for his future, Harold attended Christian Brothers Academy, where he participated in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), cultivating discipline, leadership, and a commitment to service. He continued his education at the University of Dayton, where he remained actively engaged in advocacy through the Center for African-American Affairs and student leadership, ultimately serving as president of Black Action Through Unity. During this time, he had the opportunity to learn from prominent civil rights leaders, shaping his lifelong dedication to justice and equity.
Harold’s leadership extends through his involvement with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where he has served in multiple leadership roles, including chapter president and president of the Lansing National Pan-Hellenic Council. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped lead efforts to provide food, masks, and essential supplies to families in need—demonstrating an unwavering commitment to service even in the most challenging times.
As a leader within the NAACP Lansing Branch, Harold has served in several capacities, including parliamentarian and president. In these roles, he has implemented strategic improvements to strengthen organizational effectiveness and expand community impact through collaborative leadership and active engagement.
Harold A. Pope’s candidacy is rooted in a lifelong belief that progress is achieved when communities come together with purpose and determination. His experiences—as a soldier, professional, mentor, and community leader—have prepared him to advocate for policies that expand opportunity, strengthen families, and build a more equitable future for all. He believes that real change requires all of us to be involved, and he is committed to working alongside the people of the 74th District to create lasting, meaningful progress.
Upon graduation, Harold was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Signal Corps, serving with distinction for over a decade. His military career reinforced his leadership skills and deepened his commitment to service. Following his military tenure, Harold transitioned to the private sector with Ford Motor Company, where he worked closely with union employees. This experience strengthened his appreciation for organized labor and the critical role unions play in protecting workers’ rights, safety, and dignity.
Throughout his career, Harold has remained committed to uplifting his community. He founded Guardians of Our Future, a nonprofit organization focused on mentoring young men and preparing them for success. After relocating to Michigan, he became deeply involved in civic and community organizations, including the NAACP, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Michigan Capital Region, and the Lansing Juneteenth Committee. He also played a key role in fostering partnerships that expanded mentorship opportunities and strengthened community support systems.
